Telephone Discussion, Xi Jinping and Joe Biden Discuss the Origins of COVID-19

US President Joe Biden discussed investigating the origins of COVID-19 during a phone call Thursday with Xi Jinping, according to the White House.

"They did discuss a wide range of transnational issues including COVID-19, and understanding its origins is certainly a major concern of this administration," said White House press secretary Jen Psaki.

"Yes, it's a topic that was brought up, but I won't go into it any further."

Biden vowed last month to pressure China for answers to the origins of the pandemic that has now killed 4.8 million people worldwide. Intelligence agencies say they cannot resolve the debate over whether the virus emerged from a Chinese research laboratory without Beijing's help.

Beijing denies US accusations that it is not cooperating with the investigation into the source of the pandemic.

First Talk since 7 Months
The 90-minute phone call was the first talk for the two leaders in seven months amid cold relations between the two countries.

A US official said Biden had no plans to raise the prospect of US retaliatory action if China refused to cooperate on investigations or other matters.
