Typhoon Chanthu Hits Shanghai China, Flights to Schools Close

Shanghai canceled most flights and closed some schools on Monday (13/9/2021) and Tuesday 14 September as Typhoon Chanthu approached China's financial capital and major shipping hub.

All flights will be canceled at Pudong International Airport after 11am Monday due to weather reasons. All flights through Hongqiao airport in the west of the city will also be canceled after 3 p.m., according to an announcement by the Shanghai Airport Authority.

Earlier on Sunday, September 12, the Shanghai government said it would close all kindergartens and primary schools as it prepares for the arrival of the storm, which was originally expected to make landfall in the southern part of the city on Monday evening.

Chanthu brought heavy rains and affected activity in this city of 25 million people.

China's National Observatory set an alert status (orange), the second highest alert, for Chanthu. It was not immediately clear how the typhoon would affect the container port of Shanghai, the world's largest.

China's Maritime Safety Administration last week issued a warning for the southeastern province of Fujian, where Xiamen Port is located, asking ships to adjust navigation plans and leave waters affected by the typhoon.

The Ningbo Maritime Safety Administration, which covers Ningbo-Zhoushan Port in the eastern province of Zhejiang - near Shanghai - said it had started a level four emergency response.

Shanghai Hit by Floods Due to Typhoon In-Fa
This is not the first time that Shanghai has been hit by a typhoon in 2021. Previously, the activities of residents of Shanghai, China, were hampered by Typhoon In-fa which caused flooding. The typhoon arrived in Shanghai after first arriving in Zhoushan.

On Monday morning (26/7), the typhoon hit the Pinghu area adjacent to Shanghai. The China Meteorological Center said the provinces of Zhejiang, Jiangsu and the municipality of Shanghai in eastern China will be affected by winds and heavy rains in the next few days, the South China Morning Post reported.
